Slaves, Zombies and … Dildos?
Last week, I went to preview Enslaved at Namco Bandai’s office. The game was very enjoyable for the five chapters I managed to play through and I’m excited to get the full version in my hands. It’s a massive improvement from Heavenly Sword in terms of technology and playability and also just felt more intriguing to play. It’s a cinematic game that feels like the blockbuster it is trying to be. Obviously you can get my thoughts by clicking on that link and checking out my preview. Can’t wait to see people’s reaction to the game.

I also went out and played some Dead Rising 2 at the Empire Casino in Leicester Square, London. Apart from having my face smashed in (with the magic of make up) and getting my gamble on, I had a brief play of the game. To be honest, I’m not sure what to think. The game looks fun and any game with a dildo weapon can’t be terrible, can it? I just found its entertainment value dwindle after twenty minutes of play. I’m probably not the person they are marketing towards as the game will have you spending hours killing zombies in all sorts of outrageous ways. Unfortunately it’s just not my thing. Then again, the original Dead Rising wasn’t really my thing so maybe there is just something I’m missing from the whole experience? Who knows.
Apart from the events and unpacking in my new home, I’ve been enjoying the 2x multiplayer in Modern Warfare 2 and 25x multiplayer in Gears of War 2. I’ve forgotten how much I miss playing those games and that there really isn’t enough time in the day to kick back with each of them. One thing is for certain, you take any time out of a multiplayer game and you begin to suck. Thankfully, I’m still good with Modern Warfare 2 but GOW2… dear god help me. If you are up for some horde mode and have the DLC packs then let me know, a few of us are looking to do some of those horde achievements.

Enslaved’s visual style seems heavily influenced by Heavenly Sword, but that sits in my ever-increasing back catalogue of games I’ll eventually get back to. Not read your Spong preview yet, I’ll have to check it out – any game based on the Monkey mythos has to be good, surely?
I’m excited about Dead Rising 2 myself, but then I was a fan of the original game. Zombies always manage to leave me feeling uneasy, so it’s curious that I can sit for long periods feeling like this. Vanquishing them doesn’t help alleviate this feeling either, so it’s not like there’s a method in my madness. Case Zero was a great little foray into the world of Chuck Greene, and lets you know just what to expect when the game ships in a few weeks.
GoW2 25x XP was excellent. I was disappointed with their Horde meddling this time around, as trying to make any progress on Insane with so many torque bows whizzing around just wasn’t fun. Filthy amounts of XP was to be had on King of the Hill though – find enough like minded players, and you can all indulge in an obscure form of post-apocalyptic line dancing, maxing out points for both teams and netting in excess of half a million XP each game.
What do you have against killing things in outrageous ways, Lauren? WHAT? So prejudiced.
I loved the original Dead Rising at the time, but after returning to it last month and then playing a bit of Case Zero, I can’t help but feel the moment’s passed somewhat. The combat just feels a bit stunted, not as fluid or empowering as it should. I think we’ve been spoiled by games like Bayonetta, that let you slay hordes of foes so effortlessly, while still demanding proper skills to make the most of it.
I dunno, maybe I’ll be swayed by Dead Rising 2, and I’ll certainly be checking it out, but I’m not convinced that taping things to other things is enough of a step forward for a series that, by popular opinion, absolutely needed to take one.
Enslaved sounds ace though, looking forward to that one a lot.
That Dead Rising pic might be one of the greatest of all photos.
